Exact same pin was loose soldered and back together in 30mins. Worked just like you said it would.

Thanks so much.

Subject: Gonna Give It a Try This Weekend

Wish I'd seen your info first. Local mechanic replaced the ignition switch & wire harness ($525) which didn't fix the problem. Today he tells me the original bad ignition switch (was it bad?) must have shorted something in the instrument cluster and now he wants many hundreds more to fix that.

Never heard of that problem before, if it's the odometer not lighting I'm willing to put money on it that you need to do the soldering fix.

Hi,
You're the man! I've had my cluster out several times and could not figure it out. I had drilled a couple of small holes in the housing and had tie-wrapped it together. That worked for a short time...I guess I had pushed together the bad connection. I followed your excellent instructions and photos and it was exactly like you described. Hopefully my solder job will hold. It works now! I appreciate you sharing this.

I hate electrical work especially with all of these computers on vehicles these days. I'm a pretty handy man but this page was a very reassuring! Good work. Please make more pages with instruction with more common 99-02 Silverado problems; I'd definitely be on your page again! Thank you!

Guess we all have the same problem. When I took mine apart the bad connection wasn't that obvious so I scrapped away loose solder, then re-soldered it and presto, it worked like a charm

thanks from the great white north

Subject: Fixed It! Thanks!!

My son had the problem come and go for the last few years. He went to get an inspection sticker and they would not pass the vechicle b/c of the gear selector display not working. B/f spending $$$, I did a quick internet search and found your write up. Our truck and the exact same pin loose as yours. I had a little luck with the soldering and it took me about ~40mins from start to finish. I love it when things workout like they are suppose to and don't cost anything. I would have never figured this one out without your excellent pics and writeup.

Thanks again,
Brian

FYI...
I just looked up the cost for replacement part (instrument cluster) for our truck.
It was $249 + tax + s/h!

Thanks again!!!
